Sworn Translation

Sworn translation was instituted in Brazil with Decree 13609, of October 21, 1943 and ensures legal validation to this translation category. It can be done only by a certified sworn translator and interpreter, properly qualified in public contest and registered at his/her local Board of Trade, and is valid across the national territory.

In order to ensure the translation legitimacy, the sworn translation may have the translator’s seal registered at a Notary Office and, depending on the type of document, it may be registered also at a Register Office of Deeds and Documents.

The purpose of sworn translation is to validate documents in foreign idioms in Brazil and vice-versa. Then, an Italian birth certificate will be valid in Brazil only with its sworn translation. It is required to avoid distortion or alteration of the foreign document content.

Sworn translation can only be made on the certified translator/interpreter’s sealed paper and has a standard layout. Thus, the translation design will never be the same as the original document design.
